Client brief:
Clients asked me to design a garden space that is both practical and contemporary to work in harmony with their home. It is important to my clients that the garden design represents their personality and home décor style. The design emphasis is on sharing with friends and family to entertain and dine al fresco. It is also important that my client’s pet tortoises are safe and warm while outside. For this wide garden the design includes a circular lawn, framed with blue engineering bricks to help pull focus into the space. This design trick works a treat in distracting the eye away from the boundary.
We discussed colour choices for the fence, terrace and shed because we wanted all these key elements to look great. Our clients’ love the colour grey so we embedded it in the brief right from the beginning. We think it’s a fun design idea to paint the inside of the shed white. Not only does it look fabulous but it makes finding your garden tools very easy!
Using our plant knowledge, me specified a beautiful selection of leafy perennials suitable for growing in containers. To create some drama, I added large foliage plants for texture and form to contrast with the softer herbaceous plants. Clients are really engaged in the process and enjoy seeing the beauty evolve around the garden. Ferns and Hostas in ceramic white butler sinks have been position in the shadier areas. The steel gabion is now filled with ornamental sandstone rocks and planted with succulents.
