A contemporary family garden

A contemporary family garden ready to be brought to life with dynamic foliage planting, with a hint of the Mediterranean. My clients had different ideas about the planting around the garden.. one wishing for large evergreen structural planting, the other wanted fizzing flowering perennials.. Walking between these two client briefs carefully, led me to create a plant palette combining both ideas..

The black bamboos planted in a bespoke linear planter really add a ‘wow’ factor to the garden and make a great entrance whilst also being enjoyed from the patio across the garden. Long flowering Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ really add intense colour throughout the summer, whilst the Cordylines offer vertical interest right across the year, with their upright sword-like evergreen leaves.

The main border was designed with hardy, long living plants, without the need for lots of gardening. The Phormium tenax arrived with their amazing flowerheads coming into flower and looked fantastic, as they fade they can be left on the plant to add winter interest and cut down again the following spring. Heuchera’s add a subtle drama with their deeply coloured, veined foliage with Hostas that contrast beautifully.

Lighting throughout the garden has really created delightful theatre with the shadow-play on the fences, bringing all to life long after the sun goes down.. A simply beautiful modern garden.
