Clients brief:

Clients love our cottage garden planting design service and contacted us to transform their front garden into a wildlife-friendly retreat.

An overgrown Leylandii hedge cast deep shade over their house, blocking precious morning light. Since the house faces east, this needed fixing. We removed the dense hedge, opening up the space for a new planting scheme.

To maintain privacy and support biodiversity, we planted a UK native beech hedge. This not only provides structure but also offers food and shelter for pollinators and birds. Instead of struggling with tired lawns, we extended the front path with sandstone paving, seamlessly blending it with the existing design.

I designed a vibrant planting plan filled with cottage garden favourites to attract bees, butterflies, and birds. Lush borders now overflow with colourful perennials, creating a lively and ever-changing display. My clients wanted a secluded haven but needed to maintain their stunning view of the adjoining fields from their kitchen windows.

The black barn in Chess Valley serves as a striking backdrop, so preserving sightlines was essential. I carefully positioned plants to enhance privacy while keeping the landscape open. In the main garden borders, we planted ornamental, berrying trees, bringing seasonal interest with autumn foliage and a feast for birds.

To prevent invasive weeds from creeping in, we installed a plastic root barrier and attached fine mesh screening to the post and rail fence. This clever addition blocks weeds without disrupting the view. Now, their front garden is a thriving, wildlife-friendly oasis. Delighted with the transformation, our clients highly recommend our planting design service, praising the thoughtful balance of beauty, privacy, and biodiversity.
