Client brief:

Clients want to have a dog-friendly, low maintenance planting scheme in the back garden with shades of blue, purple and whites. Not too many floriferous plants because one of my client’s little Chihuahuas was recently stung by a bee.

Design response ~

This project started out with a modest client brief, but after I met clients to discuss their wishes we developed ideas. The garden is a safe space for resident family pets, which include a beautiful white cat and two Chihuahuas. Dogs love grasses and are the perfect for placing at the front of the borders. The flowering perennials are going to be positioned further back in the borders to restrict access. It helped that we selected taller floriferous perennials and larger shrubs so that the dogs couldn’t reach the flowerheads.

The planting plan features beautiful bronze and blue ornamental grasses with an accent colour of purple. Planting Salvia nemerosa ‘Caradonna’ creates a beautiful purple haze with the blues of the grasses. We select plants for their colour and characteristics, as well as ensuring that all the plants will thrive. A soil and Ph test guides us in our plant selection initially. Grasses create much needed movement in the garden and work very well with a structured backdrop and large boulders.
