Client brief:
My clients wanted to enjoy their garden more but felt restricted by its small size and layout. Entertaining friends and family on summer evenings was a top priority. To achieve this, I designed a space that combined comfortable seating with garden planters. Integrated planting brought the plants in view and are a great talking point. Planted with herbs and perennials to add much needed planting in a small space.
Their courtyard garden was small and overshadowed by high evergreen planting from a neighbour’s boundary. Limited ground space and existing paving slabs made the layout challenging. However, I saw an opportunity to create a functional yet beautiful design. The cedar seating was skillfully built on site to my specifications and once planted, completely transformed the space into a place clients wanted to spend time in.
I designed adjoining cedar wood planters with built-in seating, incorporating square apertures for shade-loving plants between the seats and on the facings. These interactive planting pockets added texture, colour, and a wonderful talking point. Delicate ferns and small flowering plants brought life to the space, enhancing its charm.
For the build, I collaborated with the incredibly talented Trew Turner, who crafted the stunning cedar planters with precision and care.
Bringing this little outdoor space to life was an absolute pleasure, proving that even the smallest gardens can be transformed into inviting, functional retreats.
