Client brief
Clients want a family garden for their young children to enjoy as a natural play garden. Lots of pre-constructed climbing frames are on the market but we wanted to achieve something a bit different. Not just for the children but for grandparents to enjoy too. An existing garden office sat exposed on the garden slope without comfortable steps. The garden sits on a sloping chalky site and clients want a complete redesign.
Design response
Designing a garden for natural play with natural materials instantly evokes childhood memories. Bringing a sense of nostalgia and connection to the garden. Since I love working with willow canes, we naturally selected them to create the children’s den, despite battling the challenges of January mud. Thankfully, Arcangel played a crucial role by welding and constructing the mild steel framework on-site, ensuring a sturdy foundation for the structure. Once the steel framework was securely in place, we immediately started weaving to form a natural, living structure with organic appeal.
We incorporated stepping logs at varying heights to make the space more engaging, adding extra fun and challenge for the adventurous children. As a result, clients have told us these logs quickly became their children’s favourite feature, enhancing the garden’s interactive and playful nature.
Meanwhile, beyond the play area, we carefully designed a planting scheme featuring fruit trees that thrive in the soil and location. By planting apricots, plum, and apple trees, we created excitement, as the family now eagerly anticipates the promise of future harvests.
Since the clients did not own the ageing fence—and the neighbours refused to replace it—we needed a creative, visually appealing solution. Ultimately, we installed Cor-Ten steel screens, which effectively concealed the unsightly fence while also enhancing the overall aesthetics of the space. These contemporary screens beautifully complement the planting scheme, where we thoughtfully selected plants to introduce movement and seasonal interest throughout the garden.
Near the garden office, we planted black bamboo to add a striking focal point and enhance views from the office window. Clients have already expressed how much they enjoy looking outside, appreciating the garden’s beauty and ever-changing seasonal transformations throughout the year.
Moving through the space, we also upgraded the timber steps, leading down to the paddlestone path for a more polished transition. To further enhance the experience, we carefully selected and combined aromatic groundcover plants such as chamomile and thyme along the pathway edges. What was once an ordinary walk to work has now been transformed into a calming, sensory retreat full of fragrance.
The planting design includes five beautiful trees—three fruiting varieties that will develop over time, plus eucalyptus and multi-stem Silver Birch. Ultimately, this nature-rich, family-friendly garden offers countless opportunities to explore, enjoy, and nurture, fostering meaningful connections with the outdoors and natural surroundings. Designed with play, beauty, and seasonal interest in mind, this garden truly brings nature to life for the entire family.
