Client brief
Clients asked me to create a cohesive garden design for their sloping garden. The good-sized family garden was laid to lawn with no access to a paved area, which meant the garden didn’t engage the family. Clients needed their garden to become more of an entertaining and relaxing space for friends and family to share. Gardening on a slope is a challenge, especially if it doesn’t have any terracing or walling to retain the soil. My garden design was a response to the client’s wish for a design that flowed with clean lines.
We designed large timber planters to act as garden walling to make gardening more enjoyable for our clients. The large timber planters are now the focal point of the garden. Now planted with perennials and edibles clients love the idea of having a mini-kitchen garden. The timber planters are the perfect height for perching on whilst gardening and for adding informal seating. The planters have added much-needed structure to the space, in view from the living room glass doors, clients now enjoy a lovely view.
Design response ~
Landscape timbers were used to construct large bespoke planters that also act as walling to retain the sloping garden. Creating easy-to-access planting beds has made gardening on a slope much more rewarding. Changing levels are created with timber-framed terracing within the lawn, infilled with new turf to keep the garden looking green. A pre-formed polyurethane water feature combined with natural Caledonian pebbles and boulders created a lovely focal point in the garden. The sound of trickling water is captivating and all thanks to the solar panels providing energy to the pump skillfully hidden. The planting design around the waterfall included Japanese Acers, ornamental grasses and ferns.
