Client brief
This lawn-free garden design in Bedfordshire was created for clients seeking a low-maintenance, dog-friendly garden that could be safely enjoyed by grandparents, grandchildren and pets. The brief included a child-safe water feature, a workshop, a pergola and plenty of roses. Replacing the worn lawn with porcelain paving and generous planting beds eliminated muddy paws while creating a practical and attractive outdoor space.
Sweeping curves guide visitors through the garden, creating a welcoming sense of flow and a calm garden sanctuary. A west-facing pergola provides shade on warm summer evenings and extends the outdoor living space. A child-safe bubbling water feature, set within a gravel garden, adds soothing sound and a focal point for the design. Naturalistic planting, including Verbena bonariensis, ornamental grasses and pollinator-friendly perennials, brings movement, seasonal interest and wildlife value.
The result is a beautiful, accessible garden that combines low-maintenance living, family-friendly design and year-round pleasure.
