Client brief

This sloping Hitchin garden was redesigned as a natural play garden for a young family, creating a space that children, parents and grandparents can enjoy together. Rather than using a standard play structure, we designed a bespoke willow den woven around a steel framework, creating a natural and imaginative play space. Stepping logs of varying heights add adventure and have become a favourite feature for the children.

A wildlife-friendly planting scheme includes apple, plum and apricot trees, alongside eucalyptus, multi-stem silver birch and ornamental planting for year-round interest. Cor-Ten steel screens provide an attractive solution to an ageing boundary fence, while black bamboo creates screening for the garden office.

The result is a family-friendly garden that combines natural play, sensory planting and beautiful outdoor spaces, encouraging a lasting connection with nature.
