Client brief: Royston family garden
My clients wanted their overgrown family garden to feel open and inviting. We know what to do for this Royston family garden and together we explored creative design ideas to enhance their outdoor enjoyment and relaxation. We carefully worked within a modest budget, designing a functional layout. The design had to include a BBQ area and space for an outdoor dining table. I divided the garden into two sections, using a gravel and timber pathway to lead visitors toward the porcelain terrace below.
A beautifully crafted timber retaining wall frames the terrace, providing a secluded dining area separate from the main garden for added privacy. Upright landscape timbers, arranged in decreasing height, create a natural division between each area of the garden.
Tall ornamental grasses, Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’ planted in front of the timber walling to create a lovely, light feel while seamlessly connecting the different areas of the garden. A timber arch perfectly frames the terrace garden, enhancing the transition into a distinct space adorned with scented climbers for added interest. To support local wildlife, we planted copper beech hedging as bare-root stock in November, ensuring a thriving habitat for birds and insects. A stunning Tibetan cherry tree will provide much-needed dappled shade, making the terrace a comfortable retreat during warm summer evenings.
