Client brief:
An existing low brick wall ran across the garden, creating a visual barrier. So we introduced timber steps to enhance access to the garden. My clients loved the idea of using natural landscape materials and tanalised timber was the right choice. Durable and inexpensive, landscape timbers are great for adding structure. Typically made from treated pine, cedar, or redwood, landscape timbers resist rot, insects, and weather damage for long-lasting durability. The design response is a child-friendly split-level garden that feels inviting, practical, and fun for all ages to enjoy throughout the year.
The raised timber planter provides the perfect home for perennial and annual herbs, adding fragrance, texture, and plants for pollinators. We also painted the boundary fence and sheds black to contrast beautifully with the warm tones of the natural timber. Adding colour not only adds a wow factor but also works to bring out the vibrant greens in the foliage planting.
This simple yet effective design balances structure and play space, offering an inviting outdoor area that meets both the aesthetic and practical needs of my clients.
This modest-sized split-level garden in Hitchin was transformed by good design with the client’s wishes at the heart of the installation.
