Colour me green 🌿
I love the colour green! It’s the heartbeat of every garden; fresh, calming, and full of life. Green isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a statement in itself. From rich, velvety foliage to soft silvery tones and eye-catching variegation, green holds everything together.
Contrast and depth
Painting the fences nearest the house black was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my garden. It adds instant depth and makes all that vibrant foliage sing out. The contrast really highlights the beauty of the plants I’ve chosen, drawing the eye to the textures and tones that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The beauty of green-on-green
I love playing with different shades of green and combining them with variegated foliage for a bit of sparkle. In my north-facing border, evergreen planting keeps the structure going year-round, while the illuminated leaves of Glyceria maxima and Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Irene Paterson’ bring in light and contrast, even on the greyest days. That interplay of dark and light green is such a joy, creating movement and interest without needing to rely on flowers.
Keep it simple
One thing I’ve found really effective is sticking to a limited colour palette. It helps this part of the garden feel cohesive and allows the greens to truly shine. The more I design, the more I appreciate the power of simplicity, letting leaf shape, texture, and tone take the spotlight.
Welcome rain
As I write this, it’s raining outside. After such a dry spring, this late spring rain is very welcome! The garden is soaking it up, and I can already see the greens glowing with that just-watered freshness. Rain brings everything back to life — and there’s nothing quite like the smell of damp earth and foliage after a long dry spell.
So yes — col
our me green. It’s a colour of growth, harmony, and quiet confidence. Whether bold or subtle, structured or free-flowing, green has the power to transform a garden into a sanctuary.
Happy gardening! 🌧️🌿
