Ornamental grasses
Today I’m featuring ornamental grasses with two species that I have included in previous planting design projects. Planting design for my clients’ St Neots garden – Stipa gigantea and Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’.. both of these grasses will dance, even in the gentlest breeze. Nodding above-border perennials adds height and interest right across the year. With beautiful long swaying swords in tones of mid-green to biscuit and seed heads that sway and sparkle in the coolest of winter lights. These ornamental grasses do give a wonderful sense of movement in even the most constrained planting scheme.
In my clients’ garden, I have used Stipa gigantea and Calamagrostis ‘Carl Foerster’ with upright timbers and Caledonian stones and paddle stones on the ground – creating undefined pathways around the plants. This is a garden that softly embraces – the warmth of the timbers and stones underfoot in the summer sunshine is life-affirming. How lovely to be surrounded by beautiful lyrical planting – all with a muted tonal palette of biscuit to blues – see if you can spot the Festuca glauce ‘Elijah Blue’.
I am a freelance garden designer – if you would like to discuss your garden with me please do get in touch.
Happy gardening!
