Today I’m featuring two very beautiful grasses that I put into a planting design for my clients’ St Neots garden – Stipa gigantea and Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’.. both will dance in the light with even the gentlest breeze. With beautiful long swaying limbs in tones of dark biscuit and seed heads that sway and sparkle in the coolest of winter lights – they do give a wonderful sense of movement in even the most constrained planting scheme.
In my clients’ garden I have used Stipa gigantea and Calamagrostis ‘Carl Foerster’ with upright timbers and Caledonian stones and paddlestones on the ground – creating undefined pathways around the plants. This is a garden that softly embraces – the warmth of the timbers and stones underfoot in the summer sunshine is life affirming. How lovely to be surrounded by beautiful lyrical planting – all with a muted tonal palette of biscuit to blues – see if you can spot the Festuca glauce ‘Elijah Blue’.
I am a freelance garden designer – if you would like to discuss your garden with me please do get in touch.
Happy gardening
